Skywatchers will have a rare chance to witness a total lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026 — an event that will not repeat in full form for almost three years.
The eclipse will be visible across East Asia, Australia, the Pacific region and parts of western North America. During totality, the full «Worm Moon» will pass completely into Earth’s shadow, turning a copper-red hue often called a «blood moon.» The total phase is expected to last about 58 minutes.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves fully into Earth’s darkest shadow, known as the umbra. Sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere bends toward the moon and scatters shorter wavelengths, allowing red tones to dominate and create the dramatic colour shift.
The entire eclipse, including partial and penumbral phases, will unfold over several hours, but the most striking moment will be the brief period of totality, when the moon appears dim and reddish against a darker-than-usual night sky.
After this event, astronomy enthusiasts will face a lengthy gap without another total lunar eclipse. The next one is not expected until late 2028, marking a roughly 34-month pause in «blood moon» events.
The lull is due to orbital geometry. The moon’s path is tilted about five degrees relative to Earth’s orbit around the sun, meaning most full moons pass slightly above or below Earth’s shadow. Only when the alignment is just right does a total eclipse occur.
Several partial and penumbral eclipses will still take place between 2026 and 2028, but none will produce the deep red spectacle associated with totality.
When total lunar eclipses return, they are expected to arrive in quick succession. Astronomers predict a series of total eclipses spanning late 2028 through 2029, bringing multiple opportunities to witness the phenomenon again.
Until then, the March 2026 eclipse may be the last chance for skywatchers to experience a full «blood moon» for several years, making it a standout event on the astronomical calendar.
