Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with global cases expected to exceed 3.5 mln by 2050, CNN reports.

High-income countries saw nearly a 30% drop in deaths between 1990 and 2023 thanks to screening, early detection and treatment. In contrast, deaths in low-income countries nearly doubled, highlighting a widening global gap, according to The Lancet Oncology.

In 2023, 2.3 mln women were diagnosed worldwide, with 764,000 deaths. Sub-Saharan Africa faces some of the highest mortality, at roughly 35 deaths per 100,000 people.

Experts blame insufficient healthcare infrastructure. Many countries lack surgery, radiation and systemic therapy, and costly treatments like trastuzumab remain out of reach.

Addressing the disparity requires political will and investment in accessible, comprehensive cancer care, say researchers. Even wealthy nations face inequities: Black women in the U.S. die at higher rates than White women.

Lifestyle changes, limiting red meat, quitting smoking, controlling weight and alcohol, can reduce risk, but early detection remains the most effective strategy. Women are advised to follow mammogram guidelines and seek medical attention for any new breast changes.
