Harry Maguire, defender for Manchester United and the England national football team, has been given a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court over a 2020 incident on the island of Mykonos.

The case stems from an altercation outside a nightclub in August 2020, after which Maguire was arrested by Greek police. Prosecutors accused the 32-year-old footballer of assault, resisting arrest and attempting to bribe police officers.

In the initial trial held in 2020, Maguire was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery and violence against public employees. He was handed a 21-month and 10-day suspended sentence and a fine, but immediately appealed the ruling. Under Greek judicial procedures, the appeal voided the original conviction and triggered a retrial in a higher court.

After several postponements, the retrial concluded this week. The court again found Maguire guilty on the charges and imposed a 15-month suspended sentence, meaning he will not serve prison time, and no additional fine was issued.

Maguire was not present in court for the verdict. According to reports, he was preparing with Manchester United for their Premier League match against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

His legal team is expected to appeal the ruling to Greece’s Supreme Court, as the player continues to deny wrongdoing and seeks to clear his name.
