Uzbekistan has proposed tougher punishments for pedophiles, including life imprisonment, officials reported to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a meeting on protecting the rights of women and children.

Other initiatives include preventing child sex offenders from being transferred to lower-security colonies and moving investigations of certain sexual crimes from police departments to the prosecutor’s office. Only specially trained lawyers, investigators and judges would handle cases of violence against women and children.

The proposals also call for stricter penalties for sexual harassment.

To protect women who have obtained restraining orders, authorities suggest installing an «SOS» application on their phones for emergency support.
