Irish driver Alex Dunne has joined the Alpine Academy ahead of his second season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

The 20-year-old, who will race for Rodin Motorsport, becomes a full member of Alpine’s young driver programme after leaving the McLaren Driver Development Programme last October.

Dunne took part in two Free Practice 1 sessions with McLaren during the 2025 season at the Austrian Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix, impressing by setting the fourth-fastest time in Austria.

After a strong rookie campaign in Formula 2, with two wins, two pole positions and eight podiums, Dunne finished fifth in the standings and is now targeting the championship in 2026.

«I am really happy to be joining the Alpine Academy and making this next step in my racing career,» Dunne said. «Naturally, after a competitive season in 2025, the goal this year is to fight for the Drivers’ Championship.»

Flavio Briatore said the team was impressed by Dunne’s performances in Formula 2 and his Formula 1 practice outings, calling him «a very talented young driver with pure, natural speed.»

Briatore added that Alpine’s junior lineup in Formula 2, including Gabriele Mini and Kush Maini, will be aiming to win the drivers’ title in 2026.
