A film set in the universe of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones is officially in development, with Warner Bros. planning a major big-screen prequel based on George R. R. Martin’s fantasy world.
Screenwriter Beau Willimon, known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, has been hired to write the script. According to reports, the project will focus on King Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, which united six of the seven kingdoms around 300 years before the events of the original series.
The planned movie is expected to be a large-scale cinematic production, described by industry insiders as comparable in scope to Dune. At the same time, HBO is also developing a separate television series based on the same historical storyline.
Interest in Martin’s fantasy universe remains strong years after the finale of Game of Thrones. The prequel series House of the Dragon is set to return with its third season in June, while another spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, recently achieved strong ratings and has already been renewed for a second season.
Meanwhile, Martin continues working on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire saga.
