Uzbekistan plans to launch new pharmaceutical projects worth $1 bn this year, officials announced during a government meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Regional administrations have also submitted proposals for additional pharmaceutical initiatives valued at a combined $2.5 bn. Authorities say these projects could enable domestic production of medicines that currently need to be imported, potentially replacing about $1 bn in imports each year.

In Andijan region alone, 16 projects worth a total of $203 mln are expected to be implemented. One initiative will establish Uzbekistan’s first production facility for human albumin derived from blood plasma.

Meanwhile, a $188 mln pharmaceutical project is scheduled to launch this year in Syrdarya region. As part of the initiative, Uzbekistan aims to export medicines to Afghanistan valued at up to $50 mln.

Kursiv also reports that the EBRD is extending financial support to Uzbekistan’s pharmaceutical sector with a loan of up to €20 mln.
