Quentin Tarantino is preparing a return to directing with an original stage play, stepping away from previously planned film projects.

The filmmaker had earlier abandoned plans to direct The Adventures of Cliff Booth and scrapped his proposed film The Movie Critic. Instead, he is now focusing on a theatre production he has written himself.

According to reports, the play is an «old-fashioned British farce» intended for London’s West End. The production is expected to feature a large ensemble cast and physical comedy reminiscent of the stage classic Noises Off. An industry source said the show could premiere as early as next autumn.

Tarantino previously revealed in a podcast last August that he had written a play and planned to dedicate between 18 months and two years to bringing it to the stage. While some reports suggest the production could include major Hollywood names, sources say the cast may instead combine emerging performers with established actors.

The director, who lives in Israel with his wife Daniella Pick, recently appeared on screen in the film Only What We Carry. The project was directed by Jamie Adams and also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Simon Pegg, Sofia Boutella, Liam Hellmann and Lizzy McAlpine. Adams praised Tarantino’s performance, describing him as a «naturally gifted» actor.

Earlier this week, rumours circulated online claiming Tarantino had been killed in a missile strike in Israel. A source close to the director later dismissed the reports and confirmed that he and his family were safe.

Meanwhile, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, directed by David Fincher and based on a screenplay by Tarantino, is scheduled to stream on Netflix later this year.
