An Israeli airstrike hit the southern suburbs of Beirut on 10 March, as regional tensions continue to escalate amid the widening conflict involving Israel, Iran and the United States.
The strike targeted areas in Dahiya, a district in southern Beirut considered a stronghold of the militant group Hezbollah. Thick smoke was seen rising above residential buildings following the attack, according to photographs published by Reuters.
The bombardment comes as Israel intensifies military operations across the region during the ongoing confrontation with Iran. Analysts say the strikes on Beirut are part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening groups allied with Tehran.
Some observers link the attacks to the so-called Dahiya doctrine, an Israeli military strategy that advocates heavy strikes against infrastructure and urban areas controlled by hostile groups in order to undermine their domestic support. The doctrine was first associated with the destruction of the Dahiya district during the 2006 Lebanon War.
The escalation coincides with the tenth day of the U.S.-supported campaign against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury, during which Washington and its allies have carried out extensive airstrikes on Iranian military and strategic targets.
U.S. officials have warned that further large-scale strikes may follow, while additional naval forces are reportedly being deployed to the region. Critics, however, warn that the widening conflict risks destabilising the Middle East and could lead to attacks on oil infrastructure across the Gulf, potentially triggering major economic repercussions worldwide.
Despite the mounting military pressure, analysts note that neither Iran nor its regional allies appear close to collapse, raising concerns that the war could stretch on for months and intensify further.
