Netflix has confirmed a sequel to its record-breaking animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which remains the streaming platform’s most-watched movie to date.

No release date has been set for the follow-up, which will be the first project under a new multi-year deal exclusive to co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.

The announcement comes as critics predict that the original film will win at the Oscars, where it has two nominations for best animated feature and best original song. The song “Golden” previously won a Grammy for best song written for visual media, making it the first K-pop track to receive the award.

The first film follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey of the K-pop group Huntr/x as they manage fame alongside secret lives as demon hunters.

Speaking on social media, Kang said she felt «immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.» She added, «There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.»

The singer Ejae, who voices Rumi and co-wrote the film’s hit song “Golden”, said she hopes to explore new musical styles in the sequel and showcase more facets of Korean music.

Netflix has not released further details about the project. The original film took seven years to complete, from pitch to release.

Songwriter Mark Sonnenblick confirmed in February that work on a sequel is «in process,» adding that music will follow the story once development progresses.

Bloomberg reported in November 2025 that the sequel is expected to be released in 2029.
