Police in Seoul said they will implement maximum security measures for a concert by BTS at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, citing concerns over a potential terrorist threat amid rising tensions in the Middle East and deteriorating global security conditions.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said it will mobilise extensive resources to address terrorism risks around the venue near City Hall in central Seoul, where more than 200,000 fans are expected to gather.

Authorities also warned they will take strict action against false threats.

«If a bomb threat is reported on the day of the event, it could cause major disruptions,» the police said. «Anyone who causes delays or wastes police resources by making bomb threats will be subject to arrest and a full investigation until they are apprehended.»

As part of the security plan, police buses and water filled barricades will be positioned on nearby roads to restrict vehicle access to the area. Metal detectors will also be installed at 30 entry points.

Visitors have been advised to bring minimal belongings, as security screening may lead to longer waiting times at checkpoints.

Avoiding leaks

The members of BTS will hold their pre concert rehearsal at a separate location for security reasons. While rehearsals are normally conducted at the main venue, organisers reportedly chose a different site to prevent leaks of new songs and the full set list ahead of the performance.

About 22,000 fans who received free tickets distributed by the Seoul city government will be seated in three designated sections. Large screens will be installed around the square, and city officials said key facilities including restrooms, entry gates, screens and information desks will be visible on the Naver Map from Wednesday.
