Around 87.15% of voters supported proposed constitutional amendments in a national referendum in Kazakhstan, according to preliminary results released by the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan.
Of the country’s 12.4 mln eligible voters, about 7.9 mln took part in the vote.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the successful organisation of the referendum.
The amendments mark the seventh round of constitutional changes in Kazakhstan. One of the key proposals extends a special legal regime across the entire country, whereas it previously applied only to Astana.
Other planned reforms include abolishing the post of state adviser, restoring the role of vice president, and transforming the current bicameral parliament into a single-chamber legislature.
The changes also propose establishing a People’s Council of Kazakhstan to provide recommendations on major domestic issues and promote national unity. In addition, the reforms introduce a ban on dual and multiple citizenship, which could lead to the revocation of a Kazakh passport if violated.
