A high-ranking source close to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, told Al-Jarida that he was transported to Moscow on a Russian military plane in a highly classified operation due to his medical and security needs. Upon arrival, Mojtaba underwent a successful surgery and is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital within a presidential residence.

The source said Mojtaba was injured during the U.S.-Israeli «opening raids» on Iran on February 28. His injuries required specialised hospital care, close monitoring, and secure conditions that could not be guaranteed in Iran amid ongoing attacks, especially after Israel indicated it would target the new leader.

Russia’s suggestion

Iranian security services were particularly concerned about exposing his location through doctors and specialists involved in his treatment. The Russian proposal to provide care was suggested directly by President Vladimir Putin during a call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iranian officials, including Mojtaba, reviewed the plan and approved it. He was transferred on Thursday evening and treated by a team of Russian doctors along with Iranian medical personnel accompanying him.

A source close to Iran’s reformist movement expressed doubt over a message reportedly issued by Mojtaba, suggesting it may have been written by the Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani. The source claimed Mojtaba had not seen the statement and pointed to his absence from public view and lack of an audio recording as evidence.

Israel’s response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that Israel possesses information about Mujtaba’s location and condition but has chosen not to reveal it. In a press conference, he stated, «I will not offer him a life guarantee,» which was widely interpreted as confirmation of intelligence on Mujtaba. Israeli sources indicated they believe his injuries may be more severe than initially reported, though there is no confirmed information on his exit from Iran.

Al-Jarida previously reported that Mujtaba sustained injuries along the left side of his body from head to foot when debris fell near him, rather than directly on him, during the airstrike on the complex housing the Supreme Leader’s home and office in Tehran.
