Character Actor Matt Clark, Known for Classic Westerns, Dies at 89

The versatile actor appeared in over 120 films and TV shows, working alongside stars like Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford

Veteran character actor Matt Clark, best known for his roles in classic Hollywood Westerns, has died at the age of 89.

Clark passed away on Sunday in Austin, Texas, his daughter, producer Amiee Clark, confirmed. He had suffered a broken back several months prior.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Clark became a familiar face in Western films, appearing in titles such as The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, The Cowboys, and The Outlaw Josey Wales. He also featured in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Hearts of the West, and numerous other films in the genre.

Beyond Westerns, Clark worked alongside major stars including Robert Redford and Clint Eastwood, with notable roles in Jeremiah Johnson, Brubaker and The Beguiled. He also appeared in a wide range of films such as In the Heat of the Night, The Driver, Back to the Future Part III, and 42.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1936, Clark began his acting career in the early 1960s and went on to appear in more than 120 film and television productions. In addition to acting, he directed the 1988 film Da.

Clark is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. His legacy endures through a body of work that helped define an era of American filmmaking.
