A meteor streaking across Ohio caused a powerful boom that rattled residents as far as Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning, Nasa confirmed.

The space rock entered the atmosphere around 9 a.m. local time, generating a sonic boom that was reported across northern Ohio, Cleveland, and as far east as Pittsburgh and parts of New York state.

Bill Cook, a Nasa spokesperson, told News5 Cleveland that the meteor was first seen near Medina.

«I woke up this morning, and the sky fell, so I feel like Chicken Little right now,» he joked.

Nasa’s meteoroid office estimated the asteroid measured about 2 metres in diameter, weighed roughly six tons, and was travelling at 45,000mph. Despite its size, it is classified as a small asteroid.

Residents described the sound as similar to a tree crashing onto a roof or fireworks that «lingered and rumbled like thunder,» according to Cleveland.com.

No significant debris reported

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland noted satellite data suggested the boom was caused by a meteor. NWS Pittsburgh also shared a video of the meteor captured by an employee, showing it streaking across the sky.

So far, there have been no reports of debris found on the ground.

«There could be some small fragments, but a lot of it would have burned up in the atmosphere,» NWS meteorologist Brian Mitchell told the Associated Press.

Nasa confirmed that the fireball, caused by a meteor about six feet in diameter and weighing approximately seven tons, was first visible above Lake Erie. It travelled southeast at 45,000mph before breaking apart over Valley City, Ohio, with fragments continuing south and producing meteorites in Medina County.
