For years, Timothee Chalamet was the internet’s undisputed prince of alternative Hollywood. Bursting onto the scene with a waifish charm and a head of unruly curls, he was quickly dubbed a cinematic “twink” and the ultimate “ballet kid”.

His early red carpet appearances reflected this youthful, boundary-pushing energy. He famously shunned traditional tuxedos in favour of floral prints, sequinned Louis Vuitton harnesses and bare chests underneath Haider Ackermann tailoring. He was the poster boy for soft masculinity, redefining what a young leading man could look like on a global press tour.

Wardrobe transition

However, as Chalamet has transitioned into blockbuster territory with major franchises and biopics like Marty Supreme, his aesthetic has undergone a notable shift. The signature floppy hair has been cropped into a much shorter, sharper style. His wardrobe, while still steeped in luxury, has pivoted towards more conventional silhouettes.

At the 2026 Academy Awards, he stepped out in a crisp, all-white double-breasted Givenchy suit. While undeniably stylish, it was the look of a traditional Hollywood heavyweight rather than an indie disruptor. He is no longer the quirky outsider; his style now seamlessly blends in with the established Hollywood elite.

Romance history

This shift towards the mainstream is entirely mirrored in his romantic life. Chalamet’s early dating history read like a roll call of young, edgy Hollywood royalty. There was his high school romance with Lourdes Leon, a highly publicised relationship with Lily-Rose Depp and a brief summer fling with Eiza Gonzalez.

Today, he is half of one of the most talked-about power couples in the world. His three-year relationship with reality television royalty and beauty mogul Kylie Jenner marks a distinct departure from his indie roots.

At the 2026 Oscars, the pair cemented their status as an awards season staple. Although Chalamet walked the red carpet solo, he reunited with Jenner, who wore a striking red Schiaparelli gown, inside the Dolby Theatre. Despite losing the Best Actor trophy to Michael B. Jordan, Chalamet and Jenner were the picture of affection at the Elton John Oscars afterparty, holding hands and having a talk with friends and colleagues.

Recent backlash

Yet, this transition into a conventional leading man has not been without its growing pains. Timothee Chalamet is currently weathering a fierce storm of backlash following comments made during a recent town hall event in Texas with Matthew McConaughey. While discussing the survival of cinema, Chalamet controversially stated that he had no desire to work in ballet or opera, dismissing them as dying art forms that “no one cares about” anymore.

Timothée Chalamet on the state of movies: "I don't want to be working in ballet or opera"

The remarks triggered immediate outrage from the performing arts community. Institutions like the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Ballet and numerous professional dancers quickly condemned the actor for his tactless dismissal of their livelihoods.

There is a distinct irony in the fact that the actor once adored for his delicate, “ballet kid” aura is now facing cancellation from the ballet world itself.

As Timothee Chalamet continues to navigate his late twenties, his evolution is clear — he has traded his harnesses for double-breasted suits, his indie romances for a Kardashian-Jenner partnership and his niche artistic reverence for a populist Hollywood mindset. The transformation from an internet-adored ingenue to a traditional movie star is complete.
