Denis Villeneuve joked that the unveiling of Dune: Part Three felt more like a premiere than a trailer launch as he introduced the film’s cast at a packed AMC theatre in Los Angeles just after the Oscars.

Returning stars Zendaya and Javier Bardem were joined by newcomers Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson to preview the final chapter of the sci-fi trilogy. Timothee Chalamet, who plays Paul Atreides, appeared via video message rather than attending in person.

In his message, Chalamet praised Villeneuve as a «master of cinema» and thanked him for bringing the trilogy to life, calling the third instalment «a true act of cinema».

Villeneuve explained he had initially planned to work on another project before returning to Arrakis, but overwhelming global enthusiasm for the second film changed his plans.

«I felt a responsibility to finish the story,» he said, recalling massive audience turnouts during earlier screenings.

The plot

Inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, the film follows Paul after his rise to Emperor, exploring the consequences of his power, a growing galactic conflict and strains in his relationship with Chani. A teaser shown at the event hinted at both large-scale battles and Paul’s internal struggles, alongside glimpses of key characters including Stilgar and Alia Atreides, as well as Pattinson’s mysterious antagonist Scytale.

Villeneuve revealed the film takes place 17 years after the events of the previous instalment and adopts a more intense, action-driven tone. He described Paul as grappling with the burden of near-invincibility and the dangers of unchecked power, while still centring the emotional core on his relationship with Chani.

Calling it his «most personal» project, Villeneuve said adapting Dune: Messiah was particularly meaningful due to its darker themes and focus on love under pressure.

The cast

Cast members offered hints about their characters’ arcs. Zendaya teased further development between Chani and Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, while Bardem described Stilgar as wrestling with the realities of power. Taylor-Joy said Alia carries immense generational knowledge and an intense loyalty to her brother. Pattinson added that his character’s ambiguous nature makes him especially compelling.

The event also confirmed the return of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, despite the character’s earlier death, with Villeneuve hinting at a significant role in Paul’s journey.

Behind the scenes, composer Hans Zimmer and several key creatives return, while cinematographer Linus Sandgren joins the project. Villeneuve said the film expands beyond Arrakis to new locations and was shot partly on IMAX film to enhance its scale.

Still in post-production, the film is set for release on December 18, with Villeneuve noting that work on visual effects is ongoing. «The movie is alive,» he said, adding that he intends it to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.
