Iran’s Central Police Chief Ahmad-Reza Radan suggested that the European Union could turn to Tehran for assistance in protecting Greenland.

«If you are unable to defend Greenland – call us, we will come,» Radan told the ISNA news agency.

The comments come after former U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly suggested annexing Greenland to the United States, including the possibility of a military takeover. Trump cited national security reasons, claiming the island hosts Chinese and Russian submarines.

Denmark had reportedly prepared to destroy Greenland’s runways in the event of a forced U.S. takeover, and European military forces, including French and German troops, were stationed on the island to support Danish forces. Copenhagen’s concerns were heightened following the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro earlier in January.

Tensions over Greenland have since eased after Trump’s statement at the Davos forum on January 21, where he indicated that Washington intended to pursue a peaceful approach to annexation.
