Nicholas Brendon, the actor known for playing Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kevin Lynch in Criminal Minds, has died aged 54. His family said he passed away in his sleep on Friday from natural causes.
In a statement, his family said they were «heartbroken» by the loss, describing him as a passionate and creative individual who had recently devoted himself to painting and art. They added that, despite well-documented personal struggles, he had been undergoing treatment and remained hopeful about the future. The family requested privacy as they mourn his death.
Brendon rose to fame as Xander, one of Buffy’s closest friends and a core member of the so-called Scooby Gang, earning a loyal following for his humour and steadfast character. During the show’s run, he also appeared in Psycho Beach Party, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2000.
After the series ended in 2003, Brendon faced ongoing challenges with addiction and mental health, publicly entering rehabilitation in 2004. He later appeared in 21 episodes of Criminal Minds as Kevin Lynch, a former hacker.
His career was at times overshadowed by legal issues, with multiple arrests from 2010 onwards, including incidents linked to assault and prescription fraud. He sought treatment on several occasions.
In recent years, Brendon shared updates on his health and artistic work via social media, revealing in 2023 that he had undergone spinal surgeries and suffered a heart attack the previous year.
Born in Los Angeles, Brendon was an identical twin and turned to acting in part to overcome a stutter. He was married and divorced twice.
