Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel whose investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election shaped much of Donald Trump’s presidency, has died aged 81.

His family confirmed he passed away on Friday night, though no cause of death was immediately disclosed. They asked for privacy as they mourn his loss.

Mueller led the FBI from 2001 to 2013, taking charge just days before the September 11 attacks and overseeing a major transformation of the agency into a counterterrorism-focused organisation. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann Cabell Standish, their two daughters and three grandchildren.

Trump-Russia Probe Defined Later Career

Robert Mueller returned to public life in 2017 when he was appointed special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and any potential links to Trump’s campaign. The inquiry dominated U.S. politics for nearly two years and drew sharp criticism from Trump, who repeatedly dismissed it as a «witch hunt».

The investigation resulted in several indictments and plea deals involving senior Trump associates, including Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn. While Mueller’s report concluded that Russia interfered in the election in a «sweeping and systemic fashion», it did not establish that Trump’s campaign conspired with Moscow. It also stated that it did not exonerate the president on obstruction of justice.

Trump reacted to Mueller’s death with a strongly worded post on social media, while former colleagues and officials paid tribute to his career and character.

Tributes from Former Presidents and Colleagues

Former U.S. presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama both praised Mueller’s leadership and dedication to public service. Bush highlighted his role in guiding the FBI in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, while Obama described him as one of the agency’s finest directors.

Former FBI director James Comey and others who worked alongside Mueller also commended his integrity and commitment to the rule of law. His former law firm, WilmerHale, described him as an «extraordinary leader and public servant».

Distinguished Career in Service and Law

Born in 1944, Robert Mueller studied at Princeton University before serving as a Marine officer in Vietnam, where he was wounded and received several honours, including the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He later earned a law degree from the University of Virginia.

After retiring from the FBI in 2013, Mueller’s appointment as special counsel thrust him back into the political spotlight. Known for his reserved public profile, he rarely spoke during the investigation, allowing court filings and official reports to speak for themselves.

Reflecting on his career in a rare 2021 interview, Mueller said his commitment to public service made it difficult to turn down challenging roles, even at the centre of intense political scrutiny.
