Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a ballistic missile targeting the Riyadh region and destroyed five drones overnight, as regional tensions continue to escalate.

According to the Saudi Defense Ministry, three ballistic missiles were launched toward Riyadh on Sunday. One was successfully intercepted, while the remaining two fell in uninhabited areas without causing casualties.

In separate operations, Saudi air defenses also intercepted and destroyed five drones. Four were taken down in the eastern region, while a fifth was neutralized in another incident.

The Saudi Civil Defense authority confirmed that the situation in Al-Kharj had stabilised, urging residents to follow official guidance, avoid gathering in affected areas and refrain from filming incidents.

Authorities did not identify the source of the attacks. However, the kingdom has faced repeated aerial threats in recent weeks amid heightened regional tensions.

A day earlier, Saudi Arabia expelled several Iranian diplomatic staff, declaring them persona non grata and giving them 24 hours to leave. The move followed accusations that Iran had carried out strikes targeting Arab countries, which Riyadh described as a violation of international law.

The latest incidents come against the backdrop of ongoing conflict involving Iran, with continued exchanges of missile and drone attacks across the region.
