Uzbekistan has launched construction of a nuclear power plant in the Farish district of Jizzakh region, with initial concrete works now underway, according to Uzatom.

On March 24, Uzatom and Russia’s Rosatom approved a cooperation roadmap and signed an agreement linked to the project to build an integrated nuclear facility. The plan covers construction, workforce training and the development of infrastructure, including a future town for nuclear specialists.

Uzatom director Azim Akhmedkhadzhaev said the project marked a decisive step in implementing the country’s nuclear energy programme.

«We have taken a crucial step in delivering a modern nuclear energy system. Initial concrete works for a small-capacity power unit with a RITM-200N reactor have begun at the site in Farish,» he said.

Preparations are currently focused on laying the foundation for the reactor building, with around 900 cubic metres of concrete to be poured before waterproofing. This stage is expected to be completed in April.

The ceremony marking the start of construction was led by officials from the nuclear plant leadership and Atomstroyexport.

The nuclear power plant will include four power units, two based on VVER-1000 reactors and two smaller RITM-200N reactors with a capacity of 55 MW each. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate about 15.4 bn kWh annually, accounting for more than 15% of Uzbekistan’s total electricity production.
