Italian football legend Fabio Cannavaro is set to lead Uzbekistan onto the global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, embracing what he describes as a unique and inspiring challenge.
The former Italy captain, who lifted the trophy at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, took charge of Uzbekistan’s national team in late 2025, shortly after the country secured its first-ever qualification for the tournament.
Speaking about the experience, Cannavaro highlighted his desire to explore new football cultures and perspectives.
«I like to broaden my horizons,» he said, noting that his coaching journey across Asia and the Middle East has helped shape his approach.
Uzbekistan’s debut on football’s biggest stage comes with high expectations but also a sense of freedom. Cannavaro has encouraged his players to embrace the occasion without pressure, urging them to enjoy the experience and channel any nerves into motivation.
He also praised the character of Uzbek athletes, pointing to the nation’s strong tradition in combat sports such as boxing. According to the coach, this competitive mentality translates well to football, describing the players as resilient and determined.
Uzbekistan will face a tough group that includes Colombia and Portugal, with one more opponent yet to be confirmed through the play-offs.
Beyond the tournament itself, Cannavaro underscored the country’s broader ambitions. Significant investment in infrastructure, academies and modern training facilities has impressed the Italian coach, who says he quickly connected with both the project and the people behind it.
Having previously worked in countries including China, Saudi Arabia and Croatia, Cannavaro views the Uzbekistan role as another step in his international coaching journey—one that he believes reflects the nation’s growing presence in global football.
