The government of St Kitts and Nevis has launched a national biometric enrolment and passport modernisation programme, effective from April 14, 2026. The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of National Security, Citizenship and Immigration alongside the Citizenship by Investment Unit.

The move aligns with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, which require countries to issue biometric-enabled travel documents in line with leading jurisdictions such as the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Mandatory for investment citizens

Biometric enrolment will be compulsory for all citizens who obtained nationality through the Citizenship by Investment programme, with a deadline set for July 31, 2027. Dependants, including children, must also complete the process in line with international standards.

The requirement does not apply to citizens by birth.

Passport transition period

Passports issued under the programme before the launch will remain valid during a transition period until July 31, 2027. After that date, they will no longer be accepted for international travel.

Officials said the changes aim to strengthen compliance with global security standards and enhance border protection measures.

Enrolment process

Applicants must register through an official government platform and book an appointment at an authorised biometric centre. During the appointment, which typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, fingerprints, a digital facial image and in some cases an iris scan will be collected.

Authorities said all biometric data will be securely stored in encrypted systems, with access restricted to authorised personnel and in full compliance with international data protection requirements.
