As global conflicts intensify, experts are urging the public to understand basic safety measures in the event of a nuclear strike, amid growing concerns over escalating tensions between nuclear-armed states.
Currently, nine countries possess nuclear weapons, including the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and others. Ongoing conflicts in regions such as the Middle East and Eastern Europe have heightened fears of potential escalation involving such arsenals.
According to Kathryn Higley of Oregon State University, immediate actions following a nuclear blast can significantly improve chances of survival. She advises people to seek shelter indoors as quickly as possible, shut off ventilation systems, and seal doors and windows to limit exposure to radioactive fallout.
Those caught outside during an explosion should remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed skin, while avoiding the use of hair conditioners, which can trap radioactive particles.
Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends dropping to the ground, covering the face, and protecting the eyes during the initial flash of a blast.
Experts stress that the safest option is to remain inside sturdy buildings, preferably concrete or brick structures with minimal windows and avoid contaminated food or water. The impact of radiation exposure typically decreases with distance from the explosion site, making evacuation from affected areas a key priority when possible.
While the likelihood of a nuclear event remains uncertain, specialists emphasise that awareness and preparedness are critical during a period of heightened geopolitical instability.
