Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate as Iran signalled it could target another key maritime route if the United States expands its military operations.

According to Iranian media, a military source warned that Tehran may launch attacks in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a strategic chokepoint between Djibouti and Yemen, in response to potential US actions on Iranian territory. The area has previously seen attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces on commercial vessels.

The warning comes amid reports that the United States has presented a 15-point proposal aimed at de-escalating the conflict. However, uncertainty remains over whether diplomatic efforts can ease growing tensions.

Iran has already taken a more aggressive stance in recent weeks, asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. The move has disrupted global energy markets and contributed to significant supply shortages.

Iranian officials have framed the action as a countermeasure to Western sanctions. Tehran’s mayor Alireza Zakani described it as part of a broader strategy to impose pressure on the U.S. and its allies.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned that Tehran could take military action against neighbouring countries cooperating with foreign forces.

The situation has raised concerns internationally. Antonio Guterres cautioned that the region risks sliding into a wider war, urging all sides to prioritise diplomacy over further escalation.

The developments highlight growing instability across key global trade routes, with potential implications for energy markets and international security.
