Oil Tanker Hit by Explosion in Black Sea Near NATO Waters

A Russian-linked oil tanker carrying a large cargo of crude oil was struck by an explosion in the Black Sea, sparking a major fire and raising concerns over escalating tensions in the region.
The vessel, identified as the Altura and sailing under a Sierra Leone flag, was reportedly hit by what authorities described as a powerful blast around 15 miles from the coast of a NATO member state, as it approached the Bosphorus.
According to initial reports, the tanker was transporting approximately 140,000 tonnes of oil loaded at the Russian port of Novorossiysk. The explosion caused damage to the deck and engine room, prompting the crew to request emergency assistance.
All 27 crew members, believed to be Turkish nationals, were reported safe.

While no group has claimed responsibility, some sources suggested the tanker may have been targeted by drones. The ship has been linked to Russia’s so-called «shadow fleet,» used to transport oil while circumventing sanctions.
The incident comes amid intensifying attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and shipping routes, which have disrupted exports and added pressure on global oil markets. Analysts warn the latest strike could further heighten risks in the Black Sea and beyond, particularly near key international waterways.
The development follows a series of recent strikes on Russian ports, refineries and logistics hubs, underscoring the growing reach of Ukraine’s long-range capabilities and the broader geopolitical tensions affecting global energy supply.
