CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba Resigns Over AFCON Decisions

The general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, has resigned amid a turbulent period for the continent’s football.
In a statement, Mosengo-Omba said he was retiring, highlighting that his departure comes in the wake of CAF’s controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and the last-minute postponement of the women’s tournament.
«These events have left CAF facing a crisis of confidence,» he said, reflecting on the challenges of his tenure. «Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions cast upon me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving CAF more prosperous than ever.»
The 66-year-old, deputy to CAF president Patrice Motsepe, has faced criticism for remaining in office beyond the organisation’s mandatory retirement age of 63. Some staff accused him of fostering a toxic workplace, though an internal investigation cleared him of wrongdoing.
Mosengo-Omba, who holds dual citizenship in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Switzerland, was appointed general secretary in March 2021. CAF’s competitions director, Samson Adamu, will serve as acting general secretary.
The controversy
CAF is currently awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Senegal’s appeal. Senegal is challenging the decision to overturn their 1-0 win against hosts Morocco in January’s final.
The controversy began when Senegal’s players temporarily left the field in protest after Morocco was awarded a stoppage-time penalty at 0-0. Senegal returned after roughly 17 minutes and went on to score the winning goal in extra time. Following an appeal by Morocco’s football association, CAF later ruled Senegal had forfeited the match, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.
