In celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary, President Donald J. Trump will have his signature appear on future U.S. paper currency alongside the Secretary of the Treasury, a first for a sitting president.
«Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. is on a path of historic economic growth, dollar dominance, and fiscal stability,» said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. «Issuing currency bearing his signature is a fitting tribute to both the nation and the President at this milestone.»
Treasurer Brandon Beach added, «American money will continue to symbolise prosperity, strength, and the enduring spirit of the people under President Trump. His signature honours his role in the nation’s economic revival and is well deserved.»
Starting in June, Trump’s autograph will appear on $100 bills. This move places him among a small group of current leaders worldwide whose signatures or images have appeared on their nation’s currency, often in countries with autocratic rule. The change will also end a 165-year tradition of the U.S. Treasurer solely signing banknotes.
Globally, signatures on currency typically represent a central bank, treasury, or other issuing authority. For example, euro notes carry the European Central Bank president’s signature, and Bank of England notes bear the chief cashier’s. Soviet roubles displayed finance ministers’ signatures until 1937.
Other examples of sitting leaders historically appearing on banknotes include:
- Congo/Zaire: Mobutu Sese Seko from 1971 to 1997.
- Uganda: Idi Amin Dada between 1971 and 1979, with later inclusion of Apollo Milton Obote.
- Kenya: Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Arap Moi until constitutional reforms changed designs.
- Indonesia: Presidents Sukarno and Suharto, with Suharto’s notes withdrawn in 2000.
- Philippines: Ferdinand Marcos Sr during his 1965-1986 term; current notes feature native wildlife.
- Tanzania: Julius Nyerere from 1961 to 1985, with first notes issued in 1966.
