A large consignment of KitKat bars has been stolen while in transit across Europe, raising concerns over possible shortages ahead of the Easter holiday.

The shipment, containing 413,793 units from a new chocolate range and weighing around 12 tonnes, was taken on March 26 while en route to distributors.

Investigation Underway

Nestle, the parent company of KitKat, confirmed the theft and said it is working with local authorities and logistics partners to investigate the incident.

The truck departed from a factory in central Italy and was heading to Poland when it was targeted. Both the vehicle and its cargo remain missing, though no injuries were reported.

In a statement, the company said: «We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.»

Nestle warned that cargo theft is becoming more frequent and increasingly sophisticated, affecting businesses of all sizes. The company said it chose to publicise the case to highlight the growing scale of the issue.

Special Edition Bars Targeted

The stolen products were part of a new Formula One-themed range, launched after KitKat became the official chocolate partner of the sport last year. The bars were designed to resemble race cars while retaining the brand’s signature wafer structure.

Nestle cautioned that the stolen goods could appear in unofficial markets. However, it noted that individual batch codes on each bar allow authorities to trace and identify the products if they resurface.
