Max Verstappen has suggested he will use the upcoming break in the Formula 1 calendar to reflect on his future in the sport, admitting he is no longer enjoying racing under current conditions.

The four-time world champion finished eighth at the Japanese Grand Prix after starting 11th on the grid, continuing a difficult start to the season.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen said he had «a lot of things to figure out» regarding his future in Formula 1, adding that «life isn’t just Formula 1» and stressing the importance of enjoyment in his career.

Frustration with Regulations

The Dutch driver has been openly critical of the sport’s upcoming 2026 regulations, particularly the balance between combustion engines and electrical power. He has previously described the changes as «anti-racing» and said the current format feels unnatural from a driver’s perspective.

During the race at Suzuka, Max Verstappen was seen waving as Pierre Gasly overtook him on the main straight, highlighting issues with battery depletion that have become a key concern under the current system.

He later explained that the need to constantly manage energy limits drivers’ ability to push, creating racing conditions he finds frustrating and unfulfilling.

Performance Not the Main Issue

Verstappen insisted his dissatisfaction is not solely linked to results, despite a challenging campaign that has included modest finishes and a retirement earlier in the season.

«I can accept being in seventh or eighth,» he said, adding that the problem lies in the overall experience rather than competitiveness. «When you’re not enjoying the whole formula behind it, it doesn’t feel natural.»

Red Bull Focused on Improvement

Red Bull Racing team principal Laurent Mekies played down concerns over Verstappen’s comments, saying the team is focused on improving performance.

«We are having zero discussions about the other aspects,» he said, adding that delivering a more competitive car would likely restore Verstappen’s satisfaction.

Future Hinges on Changes

Max Verstappen, who is under contract until 2028 with performance-related exit clauses, indicated that potential rule adjustments could influence his decision. Formula 1 officials are expected to review regulations during the upcoming break following race cancellations in the Middle East.

While he reaffirmed his commitment to giving his best on track, Verstappen admitted that enjoyment remains a decisive factor.

«I want to be here to have fun,» he said. «At the moment that’s not really the case.»

«They know what to do,» Verstappen said.

He also pointed to interests beyond Formula 1, including GT3 racing and long-term projects, suggesting he would remain active in motorsport even if he steps away from the championship.
