Three paintings by French artists Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse have been stolen from a museum in northern Italy, police said on Monday. The works are reportedly worth a combined $10 mln.
The theft occurred at the Fondazione Magnani Rocca, on the outskirts of Parma, during the night of March 22-23. According to the Carabinieri police, thieves forced entry through the main door and took Cezanne’s Tasse et Plat de Cerises (Cup and plate of cherries), Renoir’s Les Poissons (The fish), and Matisse’s Odalisque sur la Terrasse (Odalisque on the terrace). Italian broadcaster Rai reported the works were valued at €9 mln ($10.34 mln), although the police have not officially confirmed this figure.
The museum, which houses a private collection assembled by the late music critic and scholar Luigi Magnani, said the theft took less than three minutes.
The Fondazione Magnani Rocca’s collection also features works by Titian, Francisco Goya, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Claude Monet, Peter Paul Rubens and Giorgio Morandi.
