Scott Mills was interviewed by police in 2018 as part of an investigation into alleged serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy, it has emerged. The Metropolitan Police said the claims related to incidents reported to have taken place between 1997 and 2000.
The inquiry began in 2016 following a referral from another force. A man in his 40s at the time was questioned under caution in July 2018. A full case file was later submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which decided there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges. The investigation was subsequently closed in May 2019.
BBC Confirms Exit
The development comes after the BBC confirmed on Monday that Mills is no longer working with the broadcaster. The corporation has not provided details about the reasons behind his departure, stating only that he is no longer contracted. It remains unclear whether the earlier police investigation is connected to the decision.
Mills’ final show aired on March 24, ending with his usual sign-off suggesting he would return the following day. However, presenter Gary Davies hosted the programme instead, telling listeners he was standing in.
Long Career at the Broadcaster
Scott Mills joined the BBC more than 25 years ago and became one of its most recognisable voices. He took over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Zoe Ball in January 2025 and was among the corporation’s highest-paid presenters, earning between £355,000 and £359,999 in the year to April 2025.
He previously worked on Radio 1, hosting the Official Chart show between 2018 and 2022, and appeared on programmes including Strictly Come Dancing. He also contributed to television coverage such as Eurovision broadcasts.
His departure represents another challenge for the BBC, which has faced a series of high-profile controversies in recent years. Director of music Lorna Clarke told staff the news would come as a shock both internally and to audiences, adding that further updates on the programme would follow.
