Pop star Taylor Swift is being sued by a Las Vegas performer who claims the title of Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, infringes on her trademark. The complaint alleges the album’s branding risks overshadowing the performer’s long-running stage project, Confessions of a Showgirl.
The plaintiff argues that Swift’s use of a similar name could create confusion among audiences and dilute her established brand. Her lawyer said they respect Swift’s success, but stressed that trademark law exists to protect creators at all levels.
Claims of Brand Confusion
According to the filing, the performer began developing her Confessions of a Showgirl concept in 2014 and has since toured a stage production featuring comedic and theatrical routines. She claims Swift’s album title has already begun to «drown out» her work, with audiences potentially mistaking the two projects as connected.
The dispute follows a previous decision by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which rejected Swift’s application for a related trademark, citing possible confusion with the existing brand.
Legal Action and Demands
The lawsuit seeks a court order to prevent Swift from using the «Showgirl» branding in connection with her album, along with unspecified financial damages. The plaintiff claims the work she built over more than a decade is at risk of being eclipsed within a short period due to Swift’s global reach.
Swift’s album, her 12th studio release, debuted in October and has broken streaming records, becoming one of the best-selling albums of the year.
