The International Air Transport Association has published its global aviation market figures for February 2026. The data reveals a 6.1% year-on-year increase in total passenger demand. Domestic travel expanded by 6.3% while international journeys rose by 5.9%.

Aviation capacity saw a 5.6% boost, pushing the load factor to a record February high of 81.4%. Overall, the growth in demand remains stable and closely aligns with capacity increases.

The Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions experienced robust performance, but geopolitical tensions led to softer outcomes in the Middle East. International routes between Europe and Asia surged by 14%, driven notably by travel connecting Asia with Spain and Italy.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated that the 6.1% rise in passenger demand highlights solid market fundamentals and a promising annual outlook. However, he cautioned that ongoing Middle East instability and escalating fuel prices are straining the sector, resulting in increased ticket prices and route modifications.

In the freight sector, air cargo demand jumped by 11.2% compared to the previous year, with international cargo growing by 11.6%. Cargo capacity increased by 8.5% and the load factor reached 46.0%. Every region experienced growth, led by Africa at 21.0%, the Middle East at 16.5% and the Asia-Pacific at 13.6%. Traffic volumes climbed across all primary trade corridors, highlighted by a 24.0% spike on Middle East to Asia routes and a 13.1% rise between Europe and Asia.

Walsh noted the robust cargo performance but warned that the intensifying Middle East conflict casts doubt on future market stability. He added that the industry faces additional strain from rising fuel costs, regional supply deficits and operational issues at major cargo centres.
