Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Strengthen Ties, Call Partnership a “Strategic Tandem”

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are signaling a shift from regional rivalry to closer cooperation, as both countries describe their relationship as a «strategic tandem» following high-level talks in Tashkent.
During an official visit on March 31, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov. The meetings highlighted a growing alignment between Central Asia’s two largest economies.
Kosherbayev described bilateral relations as a model of «reliable and long-term cooperation,» emphasizing the importance of regular high-level dialogue. Saidov echoed the sentiment, welcoming the Kazakh delegation and underscoring the strengthening partnership between the neighbouring states.
The two countries are expanding cooperation across key sectors, including trade, investment, infrastructure connectivity, governance, and water-energy management. Officials also pointed to cultural ties as a foundation for deeper integration.
Economic relations are a central pillar of the partnership. Bilateral trade reached nearly $5 bn in 2025, representing an increase of more than 16% compared to the previous year. Both sides have set an ambitious target to double that figure in the coming years.
The warming ties suggest a broader regional shift, as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan move away from quiet competition toward coordinated leadership in Central Asia.
