A California courtroom has granted Grammy-winning musician Lil Nas X the opportunity to participate in a mental health diversion initiative following a chaotic altercation with law enforcement last summer, BBC reports.
The 26-year-old artist, legally named Montero Lamar Hill, faced legal jeopardy after a late-night incident in August on Los Angeles’s Ventura Boulevard. During the episode, Hill was apprehended while wandering the streets wearing nothing but underwear and cowboy boots.
Following allegations of assaulting officers and resisting detainment, authorities transported him to a local hospital due to concerns over a suspected overdose.

During a Monday hearing, the presiding judge outlined a restorative path forward that could ultimately clear the felony charges from Hill’s record. To achieve this dismissal, the rapper is required to successfully finish the mandated rehabilitation program and maintain a spotless legal record for the next 24 months.
Failing to meet these court-ordered conditions, combined with a guilty verdict, could result in a maximum prison term of five years.
Hill, who entered a plea of not guilty last year, expressed profound relief regarding the ruling. Speaking with Rolling Stone magazine, he shared his gratitude for the outcome, acknowledging that the terrifying ordeal could have ended far more tragically.

Approving the diversion request, Schneider noted the visible progress Hill has already made, stating that continuing with structured psychiatric care serves the best interests of both the artist and the broader community.
