South Korean singer and actor Cha Eun-woo announced on Wednesday that he has fully settled the outstanding taxes at the centre of recent large-scale tax evasion allegations.

Currently undertaking his mandatory military service, the star used social media to update the public and offer a fresh apology regarding the financial scandal.

«I sincerely apologise for causing disappointment and confusion to many people, including my fans, with the recent tax controversy surrounding me,» Cha shared online.

He added that he fully respects the procedures and findings of the National Tax Service and has cleared the related balances to prevent any further disruption.

A staggering assessment

The controversy first came to light in January when reports emerged that tax authorities had hit Cha Eun-woo with additional income tax assessments topping 20 bn won ($13.6 mln). This staggering figure immediately sparked widespread rumours of deliberate tax evasion.
When the news initially broke, the entertainer issued an apology and vowed to fully cooperate with investigators.

Taking full ownership

Reflecting on the immense public support he has enjoyed throughout his career, Cha admitted the ongoing scandal has weighed heavily upon him.

«If there was anything that I didn’t properly take care of, that responsibility also falls on me,» he wrote on Wednesday. «I will not evade it by saying ‘I didn’t know’ or ‘It was someone else’s judgment.'»

Addressing the family business

The actor also took the opportunity to clarify specific claims suggesting he exploited a management firm set up by his mother to benefit from a reduced tax rate.

Cha Eun-woo explained that the business was established during a period of professional uncertainty as a way to secure a more stable career path.

«Looking back, there were areas that I didn’t properly take care of in that process and the responsibility lies not with my family or company but with me,» he stated.
