Jimmy Kimmel used his late-night platform to mercilessly mock Donald Trump after a controversial photograph featuring First Lady Melania Trump and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced, Variety reports.

During his opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the comedian delighted in dissecting the image. The photo reportedly shows the First Lady posing alongside the late billionaire at a high-society event years prior to her husband’s return to the Oval Office as the 47th U.S. president.

Kimmel was quick to highlight the awkward timing of the photo’s reappearance and did not hold back in his assessment of the administration’s likely reaction. He joked that the president’s team would inevitably dismiss the image as a fabrication or claim the family barely knew the man who was once a known fixture in their elite social circles.

“You know it is a bad day at the White House when the PR team is trying to scrub a photo faster than you can say fake news,” Kimmel quipped to his studio audience.

The photo goes viral

He went on to highlight the irony of the situation given the constant political rhetoric and frequent attacks aimed at rivals over their own alleged ties to controversial public figures. The host noted that the sudden viral nature of the image makes it incredibly difficult for the administration to quietly brush the association under the carpet.

The Jimmy Kimmel has long been a vocal critic of the Trump family and regularly uses his ABC programme to skewer the president’s political manoeuvres and personal controversies. This latest segment quickly gained traction across social media as viewers praised Kimmel for his sharp comedic timing and shared the clip in their thousands.

Representatives for the White House and the First Lady have not yet issued a formal comment regarding the photograph or the late-night segment.
