The Irish government has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting as it prepares to approve a package of measures aimed at ending nationwide protests over soaring fuel costs.

The demonstrations, led by hauliers, farmers and agricultural workers, have entered a sixth day, severely disrupting fuel distribution. Protesters staged coordinated actions including slow-moving convoys, motorway blockages and the shutdown of key infrastructure such as oil depots and Ireland’s only refinery at Whitegate in County Cork.

Police from An Garda Siochana have intensified enforcement, clearing several blockades in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Clashes were reported at Whitegate, where officers used pepper spray to disperse demonstrators and restore access for fuel trucks. Public order units were also deployed at Galway harbour, where protesters used tractors to block a depot.

Authorities warned that the disruptions have already caused fuel shortages, with industry estimates suggesting hundreds of petrol stations have run dry. The situation has also affected emergency services and freight operations, with ports nearing capacity.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the blockades as a threat to critical infrastructure, stating that protesters were «endangering the state.»

The government, led by Taoiseach Micheal Martin, is expected to approve a «substantial» support package, including temporary fuel subsidies and direct payments to affected sectors. While some industry representatives say an agreement is close, it remains unclear whether the measures will be enough to persuade protesters to stand down.

With schools set to reopen on Monday, officials are under growing pressure to resolve the crisis and prevent further disruption to transport and daily life.
