Following a recent arrest for drink driving in California, pop superstar Britney Spears has reportedly admitted herself into a rehabilitation centre to be treated for substance abuse, The Sun reports.

The 44-year-old singer is believed to have voluntarily entered an undisclosed facility within the United States. While the decision was her own, U.S. media reports suggest that her inner circle had been actively encouraging her to seek professional assistance.

An insider revealed to the entertainment website TMZ that the singer finally understands she has reached rock bottom. Furthermore, legal strategy appears to have played a significant role in the timing of her admission ahead of her impending court date.

Sources indicate that Spears is fully aware taking proactive steps towards recovery will present a highly favourable image to the presiding judge and demonstrate that she is taking the situation seriously.

The highway arrest

The catalyst for this intervention was a dramatic incident on March 5 in Ventura County. California Highway Patrol officers observed the Grammy-winning artist driving her 2026 black BMW convertible erratically.

Authorities reportedly trailed the vehicle for an entire hour starting at 8:13 pm as it was seen repeatedly braking and swerving across the road.

Following the traffic stop, the singer was taken into custody. It is understood that she was transported to a local hospital to provide a blood sample before being processed by law enforcement.

Reports suggest the booking procedure was highly emotional for the pop star who was said to be crying heavily throughout the ordeal. Additionally, a separate source claimed to Page Six that officers discovered an unidentified substance inside her car prior to her detention.

Recent struggles and past restrictions

This distressing episode comes just weeks after a major shake-up within her personal support network. Prior to the arrest, the singer had reportedly dismissed the security personnel and sober coaches she initially employed to help maintain her wellbeing.

Her relationship with alcohol and personal autonomy has been a heavily scrutinised topic for well over a decade. During the controversial 13-year conservatorship controlled by her father Jamie Spears, the singer was strictly prohibited from consuming any alcohol.

That highly restrictive legal arrangement was ultimately dissolved in November 2021, which granted her full control over her personal life, finances and medical decisions.
