India Factory Blast: 25 Killed in Tamil Nadu Firecracker Explosion
At least 25 individuals have lost their lives and four have sustained severe injuries following a massive explosion at a fireworks factory in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, BBC reports.
The devastating blast took place at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry in the Virudhunagar district on Sunday evening. Although the facility was officially scheduled to be closed for the weekend, local officials reported that approximately 50 employees were working inside the premises.
An injured survivor receiving medical treatment told BBC Tamil that around 25 staff members were working on the front veranda when the initial fire ignited. The sheer force of the explosion reduced parts of the building to rubble and destroyed at least three rooms.
Rescue efforts, which have now concluded, were severely hampered by the continuous detonation of firecrackers within the wreckage.
The situation was further complicated when a secondary explosion occurred during the emergency response. District Collector NO Sukhaputra confirmed to the ANI news agency that this subsequent blast injured 13 more people, though thankfully none suffered severe burns.
Victims and ongoing investigation
By Monday, authorities were still working through the grim task of identifying the deceased. Officials confirmed that 22 of the 25 victims have been identified so far. The majority of the casualties are women and reports indicate that several bodies were charred beyond recognition.
Police have registered a formal complaint against the factory owner and the foreman. Both individuals fled the scene following the disaster and four special police teams have been deployed to track them down.
While the business held a valid operating licence, Sukhaputra highlighted that forcing staff to work on a Sunday was a clear primary violation. Investigators are currently looking into whether other critical safety regulations were ignored.
Industrial accidents are a frequent occurrence in India’s fireworks sector. The industry is under constant pressure to supply firecrackers for festivals, weddings and religious ceremonies despite persistent concerns over dangerously poor safety standards.
Political condolences
The tragedy has drawn immediate reactions from senior political figures across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and described the incident as deeply distressing.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin echoed these sentiments by stating the fatalities had caused immense sorrow. He confirmed that he has directed regional officials to provide all necessary support and assistance to those affected by the disaster.
