President Mirziyoyev and WHO Chief Discuss Next Phase of Uzbek Healthcare Reforms

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held talks with World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on April 21. The high-level dialogue centred on the continued evolution of the domestic healthcare system and the enhancement of frontline medical services for the general population.
The meeting underscored a marked intensification of bilateral cooperation between Tashkent and the global health body in recent years. Backed by WHO expertise, Uzbekistan has been driving structural reforms designed to ensure medical care remains modern, high-quality and universally accessible.
Current joint initiatives are focused on upgrading the operational capacity of local polyclinics, elevating the standard of physician training and expanding disease prevention networks. The partnership is also actively paving the way for systemic technological upgrades such as wide-scale digital medicine platforms and the phased rollout of state medical insurance.
During the exchange, Dr Tedros offered high praise for the socio-economic transformations currently unfolding across the republic. The WHO chief highlighted several tangible demographic victories resulting from these policy shifts. He pointed to streamlined public access to critical care, a steady rise in overall national life expectancy and a commendable reduction in maternal mortality rates as indicators of a maturing, patient-centric healthcare ecosystem.
Both parties committed to deepening their strategic alliance. Upcoming collaborative efforts will pivot towards overhauling the domestic pharmaceutical industry, rolling out advanced digital health solutions and integrating artificial intelligence technologies directly into clinical practice.
The leaders also agreed to spearhead joint scientific research projects to further cement Uzbekistan’s position as a proactive and modernising force in regional health security.
