During the recent Regional Environmental Summit, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, made a call to establish a pioneering interstate consortium named «Clean Air of Central Asia».

According to the president, this collaborative body would function as a joint operator for green finance. Its primary objective would be to fund the modernisation of industrial facilities and facilitate the rollout of advanced emission purification systems across the region.

Addressing the acute climate shifts impacting the local landscape, Mirziyoyev suggested upgrading Uzbekistan’s national centre for combating desertification and drought to a fully recognised regional institution.

This move is designed to enhance cross-border monitoring of land conditions and improve preventative measures against severe dust and sand storms.

Economic integration for a greener future

Economic and trade initiatives featured heavily in the President’s address. He advocated for the creation of a «Green Trade Corridor of Central Asia». This logistical framework would introduce preferential customs regimes and ensure the mutual recognition of eco-friendly product certificates among participating nations.

Mirziyoyev also proposed assembling a common investment portfolio for environmental projects.

A strong emphasis was also placed on scientific data sharing and biodiversity preservation:

  • Unified Ecological Atlas: This mapping tool will serve as a vital scientific baseline, visually tracking the realities of land degradation, advancing desertification and the precarious state of regional water resources.
  • Regional Red Book: The development of a shared conservation ledger was pitched to catalogue and protect endangered species native to the Central Asian ecosystem.

Mirziyoyev also underscored the critical importance of young people in championing the global environmental agenda. To harness this demographic’s energy and innovation, he put forward an initiative for Uzbekistan to host the World Youth Climate Forum in 2027.
