Audi has appointed Allan McNish as racing director of its Formula 1 team, marking a key step in its preparations for its debut as a full works outfit.
The move comes as part of a broader management reshuffle following the departure of former team principal Jonathan Wheatley. McNish will take on responsibility for trackside operations during race weekends, reporting to team leader Mattia Binotto.
Key leadership role
As racing director, McNish will oversee race strategy, team coordination, and performance during Grand Prix events. His appointment is intended to strengthen Audi’s operational structure ahead of its entry into Formula 1.
The Scottish motorsport veteran brings extensive experience, including multiple endurance racing titles and previous leadership roles within Audi’s motorsport programmes.

Part of wider F1 strategy
McNish has already been involved in Audi’s Formula 1 project, leading its driver development programme launched earlier in 2026.
The new role expands his responsibilities as Audi builds a competitive team for the upcoming F1 seasons under new technical regulations.
Preparing for debut
Audi is set to enter Formula 1 as a factory team, with ambitions to compete at the highest level. The leadership changes are seen as part of a strategy to streamline operations and improve performance ahead of its first full campaign.
The appointment underscores Audi’s commitment to building a strong organisational foundation as it joins the sport’s elite grid.
