A 21-year-old terror suspect has admitted to orchestrating an Islamist attack targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The defendant entered a partial guilty plea as his trial commenced on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
The Austrian national, identified in court documents as Beran A, was apprehended on August 7, 2024. His arrest occurred just 24 hours before the American pop star was scheduled to perform the first of three highly anticipated shows in the Austrian capital. The concerts were subsequently cancelled, leaving fans disappointed and prompting Swift to later describe the situation as «devastating».
The concert bomb plot
Appearing before a presiding judge in Wiener Neustadt, a city south of Vienna, Beran A confirmed his guilt regarding the concert plot. Both he and his co-defendant, Slovak national Arda K, shielded their faces from the media upon entering the courtroom, a standard privacy practice in German-speaking legal systems. Beran A appeared in a dark blue shirt and jeans while Arda K wore a light blue shirt and beige trousers.

Prosecutors allege that Beran A utilised Islamic State instructional videos to construct a shrapnel explosive using a small quantity of triacetone peroxide. He is also accused of unlawfully attempting to procure military-grade weaponry including a machine gun and a hand grenade to execute the massacre.
He is currently facing a multitude of terrorism-related offences alongside charges of participating in a criminal organisation and issuing dangerous threats. If convicted he could serve between 10 and 20 years behind bars.
A global conspiracy
The judicial proceedings extend far beyond the foiled Austrian attack. The court heard that the two defendants alongside a third unnamed school friend had orchestrated a coordinated wave of international terrorism scheduled for March 2024.
The trio allegedly travelled to the Middle East with distinct targets: Beran A to Dubai, Arda K to Istanbul and the third accomplice to Mecca. While Beran A and Arda K aborted their respective missions, their associate purportedly carried out his attack and was detained on suspicion of stabbing a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He currently remains in Saudi Arabian custody.
During Tuesday’s hearing both Beran A and Arda K pleaded guilty to travelling abroad with the explicit intent to commit acts of militancy. However they firmly rejected charges that they provided moral support to their imprisoned friend in Saudi Arabia. The pair argued that he was already fully committed and acted as the primary driving force behind the overseas plots.
The trial is currently scheduled to last for four days, with the final hearing slated for May 21. It remains unclear whether the court will require additional sessions to reach a final verdict.
