The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has confirmed that the upcoming World Chess Championship match between challenger Javokhir Sindarov and defending champion Dommaraju Gukesh will take place from November 23 to December 17, 2026.

This contest is set to make history as the youngest battle for the global chess crown. Both grandmasters will be just 20 years old when the opening moves are played on the board.

FIDE is currently accepting bids from prospective countries and cities willing to stage the event. The governing body has stipulated that the host must provide a minimum prize fund of $2.5 mln.

The road to the final

The Uzbek challenger secured his spot in the championship match following a dominant performance at the Candidates Tournament in Cyprus. Sindarov played exceptionally well throughout the competition and managed to clinch first place to become the official challenger before the final round was even completed.

He will now face the reigning world champion from India. Born on May 29, 2006, Gukesh has held the supreme chess title since 2024 after a victorious and hard-fought match against Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren.

Prodigies face off

Both competitors have long been recognised as immense talents within the chess world. Sindarov was born in Tashkent on December 8, 2005 and quickly made a name for himself on the international stage. He won the under-9 World Rapid Championship in 2014 and achieved the coveted grandmaster title in 2018 at the age of just 12.

At the time, the Uzbek player was one of the youngest grandmasters in the history of the sport. However, his upcoming opponent Gukesh soon went on to break that specific age record, setting the stage for a thrilling rivalry between two of the brightest young minds in modern chess.
