Antonelli Bounces Back to Grab Miami Pole as Verstappen Splits Mercedes and Ferrari

After a Sprint race earlier in the day, Championship leader Kimi Antonelli bounced back to secure pole position for the Miami Grand Prix. The Mercedes teenager delivered a blistering lap in the final segment of qualifying to deny Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Following Lando Norris‘s commanding Sprint victory for McLaren, the papaya team looked like the favourites heading into the session. However, as the Florida sun beat down and track temperatures hovered around 49 Degrees Celsius, the heavily upgraded cars from the top four teams converged to create a fiercely competitive battle for the front row.

Antonelli set an unbeatable benchmark of 1m 27.798s on his first run in Q3. Despite locking up into Turn 1 and aborting his final flying lap, his initial effort proved too quick for the rest of the field to catch as track conditions seemingly worsened in the closing minutes.

Q1: Audi’s nightmare continues, Piastri scrapes through

The opening 18-minute segment provided plenty of drama, particularly for the Audi garage. Gabriel Bortoleto, who was disqualified from the earlier Sprint due to a technical infringement, barely made it out of the garage in time to set a lap. His struggles were compounded when he pulled off the circuit with his rear brakes heavily on fire. He was eliminated at the bottom of the timing sheets.

Meanwhile, Sprint runner-up Oscar Piastri suffered a major scare. The McLaren driver struggled to find pace on his used soft tyres and only narrowly avoided elimination, scraping through in 16th place by just over two tenths of a second.

At the bottom of the table, Bortoleto was joined in the drop zone by Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad, both Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, and the Cadillac pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.

Q2: Hamilton shows pace as midfield battle rages

With the track evolving and the wind picking up, Q2 saw the lead change hands multiple times. Lewis Hamilton briefly rolled back the years to top the timing screens ahead of his teammate, showing that Mercedes still possessed formidable one-lap pace despite bringing a smaller upgrade package to Miami than their rivals.

Alpine continued their impressive weekend by safely guiding both Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto into the top 10 shootout. That success came at the expense of several midfield hopefuls. Nico Hulkenberg just missed the cut in 11th for Audi, followed by Liam Lawson, Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon and Alexander Albon.

Q3: A one-lap wonder secures pole

As the final 13-minute shootout began, Antonelli immediately stamped his authority on the session. He strung together a flawless opening run to go over three tenths clear of Leclerc and nearly four tenths ahead of Verstappen.

When the grid emerged for their final attempts, the grip levels appeared to have dropped. Only Verstappen managed to improve on his final run, going purple in the final sector to snatch second place on the grid, but the Dutchman still finished 0.166s adrift of Antonelli’s provisional pole time.

Leclerc held on for third ahead of Sprint winner Norris. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton will share the third row for Mercedes, while Piastri could only manage seventh. Colapinto impressed once again to qualify eighth, leading Isack Hadjar and Gasly to round out the top 10.
