Diageo has defied gloomy analyst expectations by posting a 0.3% increase in quarterly organic net sales, Reuters reports. A company-compiled poll had initially predicted a 2.3% decline for the three months ending in March, but the world’s leading spirits manufacturer was buoyed by robust demand for Guinness across Britain and Ireland.

Sales were further bolstered by consumers in Latin America and the Caribbean actively stocking up on beverages ahead of the upcoming football World Cup.

North American struggles

Despite the overall positive figures, global growth was hindered by a sluggish performance in the United States. North America remains Diageo’s largest market and recorded a 9.4% drop in organic sales over the quarter. However, this contraction was notably less severe than financial analysts had originally forecast.

Chief executive Dave Lewis, who took the helm in January, acknowledged the regional difficulties in a recent statement. He noted that North America remains the company’s greatest challenge due to soft market conditions and a pressing need for a more competitive offering. Lewis confirmed that strategic actions are already underway to rectify the situation.

«Drastic Dave» and future forecasts

Lewis quickly lived up to his «Drastic Dave» moniker, a nickname earned from his previous cost-cutting tenures at Tesco and Unilever, shortly after stepping into his new role. In February he took decisive action by halving the firm’s interim dividend and downgrading its sales forecast, warning investors that overall 2026 organic sales could fall by between 2% and 3%.

Despite the recent turbulence, the maker of Johnnie Walker whisky has maintained its broader fiscal 2026 outlook. However, executives remain highly cautious about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential to disrupt global energy, supply and distribution networks.

Looking ahead, Lewis faces the monumental task of reducing corporate debt and reinvigorating growth in a remarkably challenging consumer landscape. The wider spirits industry is currently battling several heavy headwinds, including the soaring cost of living, the increasing popularity of weight-loss medications and a noticeable shift in drinking habits among younger generations.
