A public dispute has emerged between federal and local law enforcement regarding the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie. FBI Director Kash Patel recently condemned police in Arizona for allegedly blocking his agency from joining the kidnapping inquiry during its crucial initial days.
The 84-year-old mother of NBC Today programme presenter Savannah Guthrie vanished from her eldest daughter Annie’s Tucson home on January 31. She was officially reported missing the following afternoon after failing to attend a virtual church service with a friend.
Claims of stalled cooperation
During an appearance on the Hang Out With Sean Hannity podcast on Tuesday, Patel voiced his immense frustration over the early stages of the investigation. He claimed that the FBI immediately offered their expertise, forensic analysis and specialist manpower but were actively shut out by local officials for four days.
According to the FBI chief, federal intervention was ultimately required to unlock vital security footage from a Ring doorbell camera which captured a masked and armed individual outside the property. Patel also noted that federal agents offered to fast-track DNA testing at their Quantico laboratory in Virginia to secure faster and potentially superior leads.
Arizona police issue firm rebuttal
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has forcefully rejected the federal director’s narrative. In a written statement, local officials insisted they engaged with federal partners the moment they realised the severity of the situation.
The department clarified that both their officers and the Guthrie family notified the FBI without delay. They also dismissed Patel’s claims regarding the forensic timeline by stating that evidence processing decisions were dictated solely by operational needs. The local force maintained that their own forensic teams and the Quantico laboratory operated in close partnership from the very beginning of the crisis.
A desperate search continues
Despite recovering the chilling doorbell footage of an armed suspect on the morning of the disappearance, investigators have not yet named any persons of interest or established a motive for the suspected abduction.
As the hunt for the missing woman continues, television star Savannah Guthrie confirmed in late February that her family has put forward a staggering $1 mln reward for any information resulting in her mother’s safe recovery.
